A Documentary film about an ancestral house of Han in Surabaya

GREEN TALK
15 November 2011, 19.00-21.00
at Perpustakaan Pusat (Central Library), Universitas Indonesia Depok
Debate with Winy Maas, Ridwan Kamil, Avianti Armand, Imelda Akmal et al.
Ticket reservation: sekretariat.iai@gmail.com (Rp 175,000)
TIP: buy the ticket for Public Lecture IAI 15-16 November for Rp 500,000 including Green Talk (contact sekretariat.iai@gmail.com)
Green Talk is a public event that brings visionary thinkers in architecture and urbanism together to discuss about the state of green in the world today. In this debate, the audience can interact with the very special speakers whom we have invited for this event. There is confusion about what green means for design, architecture and urbanism. Winy Maas in the well-acclaimed book Green Dream (NAi publisher, 2010) asserts that green projects are still disconnected efforts which fail to attain the scale of the interventions that are actually called for. Green is fashionable, but its design potentials remain unexplored. The discussion will involve questioning what is currently labelled as ‘green’ and if it makes sense in the bigger picture. It challenges architectural conventions and looks into the potentials of new green architecture. It recognizes that green buildings alone do not make a green city, but also looks at potential solutions within the cities themselves, how it will change them and where the boundaries lie. Is a green city actually feasible? Is green is ultimately about performance? The discussion will comment on green urban projects and observations of the future.
Speakers:
Winy Maas: professor at TU Delft, world class architect & urban designer; founder of MVRDV, a multi awarded architecture firm in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. He is also director of The Why Factory, a think tank and research group at TU Delft, the Netherlands.
Avianti Armand: Jakarta-based independent architect, curator, writer, critic and lecturer at the University of Indonesia.
Ridwan Kamil: one-of-a-kind architect, urban designer, lecturer; the spearhead of URBANE, a well-known architecture and firm in Bandung and Jakarta, Indonesia. His works have won many awards. He also teaches at the Bandung Institute of Technology.
Imelda Akmal: writer, architect; director of IAAW, she has written many books on architecture in Indonesia. She is a living database on contemporary architecture practice in Indonesia since 1998. She obtained a Master degree in architectural theory from the Architectural Association in London.
Moderator:
Daliana Suryawinata: architect, urbanist, curator; director of SHAU Rotterdam, an architecture and urban design office. After obtaining a master degree from the Berlage Institute Rotterdam, she worked for OMA, West8 and MVRDV. She curated Open City Jakarta, a section of the prestigious 4th International Architecture Biennale Rotterdam. She also a researcher and lecturer at The Why Factory, TU Delft and chief officer for IAI-EU.

SURPRISE STOVE is a one-day food festival exploring issues of public spaces in the city through the wisdom of street-inspired food culture. A movement that started on the streets of Indonesia, the guerrilla-style event brings chefs and cooking enthusiasts to cook in the city who will then give away their culinary creations to the public for free.
In this special edition of SURPRISE STOVE presented by KeukenBdg, jongArsitek!, and FIVEFOOTWAY, the festival explores urban conditions unique to Singapore.
In a country with plenty of well-designed formal public spaces, where are the ‘alternative’ ones? In a country known for its discipline and order, where are the best places for informal and impromptu gatherings to take place? In a fast-paced city like Singapore, where are the pockets of spaces where one can truly live and enjoy the city?
For one day, Haji Lane, a unique enclave in the heart of Singapore with an eclectic mix of fashion and lifestyle shops, will be turned into a public urban kitchen where the community can gather on a lazy Saturday afternoon to enjoy good company and good food. Take a stroll and window-shop along the street, cruise the historic Kg. Glam area in the two-wheelers, smell the spices in the air and enjoy the slow life at Haji Lane.
Surprise Stove Singapore – enjoy life, go slow, eat together.
