SURPRISE STOVE is a one-day food festival exploring issues of public spaces in the city through the wisdom of street-inspired food culture. A movement that started on the streets of Indonesia, the guerrilla-style event brings chefs and cooking enthusiasts to cook in the city who will then give away their culinary creations to the public for free.
In this special edition of SURPRISE STOVE presented by KeukenBdg, jongArsitek!, and FIVEFOOTWAY, the festival explores urban conditions unique to Singapore.
In a country with plenty of well-designed formal public spaces, where are the ‘alternative’ ones? In a country known for its discipline and order, where are the best places for informal and impromptu gatherings to take place? In a fast-paced city like Singapore, where are the pockets of spaces where one can truly live and enjoy the city?
For one day, Haji Lane, a unique enclave in the heart of Singapore with an eclectic mix of fashion and lifestyle shops, will be turned into a public urban kitchen where the community can gather on a lazy Saturday afternoon to enjoy good company and good food. Take a stroll and window-shop along the street, cruise the historic Kg. Glam area in the two-wheelers, smell the spices in the air and enjoy the slow life at Haji Lane.
Surprise Stove Singapore – enjoy life, go slow, eat together.
